This is the reason many people come to Cappadocia, and it lives up to the hype. Baskets lift off in the half-light before dawn, and as the sun rises you drift silently over valleys of fairy chimneys, orchards and rock-cut dwellings, surrounded by a hundred or more other balloons rising with you, a spectacle that is almost as good to watch from the ground. Flights launch only at sunrise, when the winds are calmest, and every flight depends on the civil-aviation authority's daily weather clearance, so cancellations happen; build a spare morning into your trip and book for your first available day, not your last. Operators run everything from large twenty-plus baskets to smaller premium flights of eight, and all reputable ones are licensed and insured. Dress in layers, wear flat shoes, and know that flights sell out weeks ahead in peak season. It is expensive, and worth every lira.
