The second of the great underground cities open to visitors, Kaymaklı sits closer to Nevşehir and sprawls outward more than it drops downward, built around a central ventilation shaft on several accessible levels. Where Derinkuyu goes deep and dramatic, Kaymaklı feels more like a warren of interconnected homes and workshops, with wide communal areas, storage rooms, wells and a striking number of stone-lined stables and kitchens still visible. Because the layout is more horizontal and its main spaces roomier, many families and less confident visitors find it the more comfortable of the two, though a few connecting passages are still low enough to make you stoop. Colour-coded arrows guide you down and back up, red for the way in and blue for the way out. It stays cool inside all year, so carry a layer, wear shoes you can crouch in, and go early or late to have the tunnels largely to yourselves.

💡Tip: Follow the red arrows down and the blue arrows back up so you don't get turned around in the tunnels.
