The classic Cappadocian silhouette, tall tapering rock pillars capped with darker stone, reaches its most dramatic in Love Valley just outside Göreme, where clusters of these fairy chimneys rise dozens of metres from the valley floor. They form when a hard basalt cap protects the softer tuff beneath from erosion, leaving the columns standing as the rock around them washes away over millennia. You can see them two ways: from the roadside viewpoint on the Göreme to Uçhisar road, where the balloons and sunset crowds gather, or on foot along the valley trail that winds right in among the pillars through orchards and vineyards, which is quieter and far more rewarding. The late-afternoon sun turns the whole valley warm gold and pink, the best light of the day. Wear proper shoes for the sandy, uneven path, carry water, and start back before dark, as the trail is unlit.
