Saklikent Gorge — Fethiye

⏱️ Time needed: Half day; full day combined with Tlos📅 Best time: June to September, once the water level drops

Saklikent, meaning hidden city, is one of the deepest and longest canyons in Turkey, cut by an icy mountain river through sheer rock walls that soar up to 300 meters and in places narrow to just a few meters apart. A wooden boardwalk clings to the cliff above the water for the first stretch, then you wade into the river itself, thigh-deep and bracingly cold even at the height of summer, to continue up the gorge on foot. That cold water is exactly the appeal on a scorching day, and the shaded canyon feels almost air-conditioned compared with the coast. Trout restaurants on stilted platforms sit at the entrance, serving lunch over the rushing stream, and operators offer tubing and canyoning deeper in. It lies about an hour inland from Fethiye and pairs naturally with nearby Tlos, an ancient Lycian hilltop city studded with rock tombs.

💡Tip: Grippy water shoes or old trainers are essential for the slippery riverbed; go in high summer, as the current runs strong after rain.
